Looking for a Help on Your Project?

The short answer is yes, it is possible to install wainscoting over wallpaper. However, there are several factors to consider before proceeding with this project. Let’s explore them in detail.

Assess the Condition of the Wallpaper

Before you decide to install wainscoting over wallpaper, it is important to evaluate the condition of the existing wallpaper. If the wallpaper is peeling, bubbling, or showing signs of damage, it is recommended to remove it before proceeding with the wainscoting installation. Wainscoting is usually attached directly to the wall, so a smooth, flat surface is essential for a successful installation.

    Prepare the Wallpapered Walls

If the wallpaper is in good condition and firmly adhered to the wall, you can proceed with the wainscoting installation. However, it is crucial to prepare the walls properly to ensure a strong and durable bond.

Start by thoroughly cleaning the wallpapered walls with a mild soap and warm water solution. This will remove any dirt, grease, or residue that may prevent proper adhesion. Allow the walls to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Next, lightly sand the surface of the wallpaper with fine-grit sandpaper. This step will create a rough texture on the wallpaper, allowing the adhesive to bond effectively. Be careful not to sand too aggressively as it may damage the wallpaper.

    Apply an Adhesive Primer

To further enhance the bond between the wallpaper and the wainscoting panels, it is recommended to apply an adhesive primer on the wallpapered walls. The adhesive primer will create a surface that encourages proper adhesion and prevents peeling or bubbling.

Choose an adhesive primer specifically designed for wallpaper. Apply the primer with a brush or roller, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding to install the wainscoting.

    Install the Wainscoting Panels

Now that the wallpapered walls have been properly prepared, it is time to install the wainscoting panels. Start by measuring and marking the desired height for the wainscoting on the walls. Use a level and a pencil to ensure accuracy.

Next, cut the wainscoting panels to the appropriate size using a saw or a miter box. Apply an adhesive specifically designed for wainscoting to the back of each panel, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Press the panels firmly against the walls, ensuring they are level and evenly spaced. Use a level and wood shims to make any necessary adjustments.

Secure the panels further by nailing or screwing them into place. Make sure to countersink the nails or screws to create a smooth surface for the final finish.

    Finishing Touches

After the wainscoting panels have been installed, it is time for the finishing touches. Fill any nail or screw holes with wood putty and sand them smooth. Wipe away any excess putty with a damp cloth.

Once the putty has dried, you can paint or stain the wainscoting to your desired color or finish. Choose a high-quality paint or stain that is compatible with wood.

Installing wainscoting over wallpaper is possible but requires careful preparation. Evaluate the condition of the wallpaper and ensure it is firmly adhered to the wall. Properly clean, sand, and apply an adhesive primer to create a strong bond. Finally, install and finish the wainscoting panels to complete the transformation of your walls.+
