The lower the grit number, the coarser the sandpaper, and vice versa. Common grit sizes for sandpaper range from 40 (very coarse) to 1500 (very fine).     Aside from choosing the right sandpaper grit, there are several precautions to take when sanding hardwood floors to avoid potential damage:

    1. Test in inconspicuous areas: Before starting the sanding process, it is crucial to test different grits on a small, hidden area of the floor to evaluate their impact. This will help determine the appropriate grit progression for your specific hardwood floor.
    2. Use proper sanding machinery: Investing in high-quality sanding machinery, such as belt or drum sanders, can ensure precise control and reduce the risk of damage caused by human error.
    3. Sand with the grain: Always sand in the direction of the wood grain to prevent scratches or swirl marks. Sanding against the grain can create uneven patterns and compromise the floor’s appearance.
