    Step 1: Safety Precautions

    Before conducting any tests, always prioritize safety. Ensure the electricity is turned off, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). If unsure about handling electrical systems, consult a qualified electrician.

    Step 2: Identify the Hot Wire

    Using a circuit tester with two probes or a non-contact voltage tester, locate the hot wire by touching one probe to the hot wire and the other probe grounded (e.g., to a metal junction box) or via non-contact proximity sensing. The indicator on the tester will light up or emit a sound if voltage is present, confirming the hot wire.

    Step 3: Determine the Neutral Wire

    After identifying the hot wire, the neutral wire can be determined. By process of elimination, the remaining wire will be the neutral wire. However, for additional confirmation, test the wire using the same process as in Step 2. If no voltage is detected, the wire is likely the neutral wire, ensuring proper polarity is established.

    Step 4: Record and Proceed

    Once the polarity is confirmed, it is recommended to label or record the hot and neutral wires to avoid confusion during future electrical work.
